Title: Time to Think, Listening to Ignite the Human Mind
Author: Nancy Kline
Why we love it: Nancy Kline emphasizes what we already know about the immense insight that is generated when people are encouraged to think for themselves. She emphasizes how ‘high-quality listening’ combined with ‘incisive questions’ create a powerful ‘Thinking Environment’. OK, so this is nothing new to coaches, however, the simple approach she outlines is very powerful. Chapters 24 and 25 which set out the 6 steps to a ‘Thinking Session’ and show its application, are a useful reference point for any coach.

Title: Happier, Can you learn to be Happy
Author: Tal Ben-Shahar, Phd
Why we love it: Tal Ben-Shahar bases his book not only on the latest positive psychology research but also on how he applied it (and continues to apply it) to his own life. The personal perspective on his own quest for happiness makes this book very engaging and accessible. Its also filled with ‘Time in’s’ which are personal reflection exercises and various exercises which would be useful for any coaching toolkit
Title: Social Intelligence
Author: Daniel Goleman
Why we love it: OK so its typical Goleman fare with small print and lots of detail. The detail is however very useful in broadening our understanding of how the brain works when people relate to each other. This has all sorts of applications from building rapport with our clients to educating the market about the scientific principles that make coaching such a powerful modality.
Title: Coaching for Performance
Author: Sir John Whitmore
Why we love it: This has got to be one of the standards of the coaching profession. Many years after its original publication, this book remains practical and relevant providing valuable information for any coach operating in the workplace as well as for leaders looking to incorporate a coaching approach in their leadership toolkit.
